Ben Hill County commissioners voted Aug. 6 to adopt a final county millage rate of 14.687% for incorporated and unincorporated areas, matching the previous year’s levy. Commissioner John Mooney moved the measure and Vice‑Chair Hope Harmon seconded; the motion carried 4–1, with Commissioner Daniel Cowan opposing.
County Manager Michael Dinnerman told the commission during a public hearing that the county is keeping last year’s millage rate. He said reassessment produced a 3.02% percentage increase that amounts to about $210,000 in additional revenue, and that new growth — including new houses and renovations — added roughly $138,000.
The resolution as presented also accepted the School Board’s millage rate at 15.509% and authorized the chairman to sign the Tax Levy Resolution and related documents. John Mooney made the motion to adopt the county millage rate and the school board figure; Hope Harmon seconded.
The action follows the commission’s public hearing on the proposed rate; no members of the public spoke during the hearing. By adopting the rate, county officials leave the nominal tax rate unchanged while property revaluations and new construction increase the county’s tax digest and expected revenue.
The commission’s vote on the millage rate was recorded in the meeting minutes; documents related to the Tax Levy Resolution were authorized to be signed by Chairman Steve Taylor.
