Ben Hill County approves rezoning of 189 Ed Ward Rd. for Arising Industries expansion

The Ben Hill County Board of Commissioners voted Oct. 7, 2025 to rezone 189 Ed Ward Rd. from GF (General Farming) to WLI (Wholesale Light Industrial) to accommodate expansion of Arising Industries, Inc.
Building and Zoning Administrator Jake Hughes said the Planning and Zoning Commission had approved the petition and recommended approval by the board, and he indicated there was no evidence the rezoning would impose excessive or burdensome use on streets, transportation facilities, utilities or schools. Public commenter O.D. Netter of Fitzgerald urged the commissioners to approve the application in support of the business expansion.
Commissioner John Mooney moved to approve the rezoning for J. Batten (Arising Industries); Commissioner Daniel Cowan seconded the motion and it passed with Commissioners Mooney, Cowan, Calloway, Vice-Chair Hope Harmon and Chairman Hal Wiley voting in favor.
The board did not record any conditions or mitigation measures attached to the approval in the meeting minutes. The rezoning approval allows the property owner to proceed under WLI zoning rules; any required building permits or plan reviews will follow county permitting procedures.
