Ben Hill County Commissioners on Jan. 6 approved a special exception allowing a temporary telecommunications tower at 267 Nora Morris Road for up to 24 months.
Building and Zoning Director Jake Hughes told commissioners Crown Castle applied for the temporary site and that a tower previously occupied the parcel. "There aren’t any issues with setbacks," Hughes said, and added the site "will be a benefit because it will be filling a void." He told the board the tower would not change zoning and was located far enough from residential zoning to avoid conflicts and would not generate additional traffic.
Why it matters: county officials said the tower fills a coverage gap in the area; because the approval is a special exception for a limited period, the company must reapply if it seeks to keep the structure beyond 24 months. Commissioners voted to approve the exception by voice vote; the motion was made by Commissioner Bennie Calloway and seconded by Commissioner Daniel Cowan and passed with Commissioners Calloway, Cowan, Mooney and Vice‑Chair Hope Harmon voting in favor.
The approval does not change zoning designations for surrounding property and county staff said no additional traffic or setback issues are expected. Any extension beyond the approved 24‑month period would require a new application to the county.
