Summary
The Commission approved submitting a MacArthur Foundation Safety and Justice Challenge renewal application (up to $700,000) focusing on pre‑arrest decision points, case processing, substance use/mental health and racial and ethnic fairness; USD will submit the application by Sept. 25, 2020.
On Sept. 22 the Minnehaha County Commission voted to approve submission of the MacArthur Foundation Safety and Justice Challenge Implementation Site Grant Renewal Application.
Erin Srstka, University of South Dakota Community Projects Director, said the renewal application could provide up to $700,000 overall ($350,000 per year for two years) and identified four goal areas: pre‑arrest decision points, case processing efficiency, substance use disorder/mental health responses, and racial and ethnic fairness/community engagement. Commissioner Karsky moved to approve the submission; Commissioner Barth seconded. The motion passed 3 ayes.
The application will be submitted by Sept. 25, 2020. If awarded, the grant would support local efforts to address racial and ethnic equity and improve criminal justice processes; the Commission’s vote authorized the County to participate in the renewal submission.
