Commission approves lease extension, declares faulty vehicle surplus and reviews election and mask policy updates

The Minnehaha County Commission on Oct. 13 authorized a second one-year extension of a real property lease with First Dakota National Bank for office space used by county staff, setting monthly rent at $3,764.75. The total monthly amount includes a $3,008.75 base rent plus charges for one underground parking spot and multiple ramp spaces. Emergency Management Director Jason Gearman requested the authorization; the motion passed 5-0.
Jamie Gravett, Juvenile Detention Center Director, requested that a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu (VIN 1G1ZS58N77F196758) be declared surplus for disposal because its on-board computer is nonfunctional and repairs (estimated at $1,400) would likely exceed the vehicle’s market value if fixed. The minutes record mileage at 132,000 and Kelley Blue Book value of approximately $1,500 if operable. Commissioners declared the vehicle surplus by roll call vote, 5 ayes.
In liaison and business updates, Commissioner Bender reported on Building Committee subcommittee activity related to the Administration/Extension Building remodel. Commissioner Barth raised concerns he had received from residents about voting if they lacked a South Dakota driver’s license; he noted that voters may sign an affidavit at the polls if they cannot obtain a driver’s license before an election. Commissioner Bender also noted a face mask policy for county employees requiring masks when away from primary desks and that the county auditor position had been posted following a resignation.
All motions recorded in these items carried unanimously. The commission adjourned until 9:00 a.m. Oct. 20, 2020.
