Highway Superintendent DJ Buthe presented the Minnehaha County Highway Department’s 2020 safety initiatives, citing historical crash statistics and Federal Highway Administration proven countermeasures to identify and prioritize safety projects.
Buthe said the department uses data to target safety work and described the department’s strategic plan and mission. As part of the presentation, Buthe requested two right-of-way purchases to allow reconstruction of County Highway 149 from County Highway 122 north to the Colton city limits. The commission approved purchase of 0.504 acres for $4,082.40 and 0.041 acres for $332.10 to meet safety standards (motion by Karsky, seconded by Beninga; 5 ayes).
The purchases were presented as necessary to advance upcoming construction and to apply FHWA-recommended countermeasures in locations identified by the historical crash review. No litigation or contested condemnation proceedings were recorded; votes were unanimous.
