Charlotte County Board hears monument contextualization and education center updates, approves budget and appointments

At the June 13 meeting the Board heard several community and program updates, made routine fiscal approvals and approved a local appointment.

Monique Williams and Kathy Liston provided an update on plans to create a historical contextualization for the county's Confederate monument. Liston clarified the term 'contextualization' as research-based explanatory material and said the team will seek community input and return with a draft near the end of the year. Williams urged the community not to avoid the conversation and said people should 'start seeing "us for who we are" and move forward.'

Representatives from the Southside Virginia Higher Education Center — Lisa Mettler and Stephanie Robertson — told the Board the center has served 188 students since it began and that 15 of those students were from Charlotte County; they asked the Board and local partners to help publicize programs to high-school students.

Supervisor Walter T. Bailey reported that the Charlotte County Rescue Squad averaged about $16,000 per week in income and that an EMS study is expected to begin around Sept. 1. Supervisor Tony Reeves moved to appoint Toni Reeves to the Social Services Board; the motion was seconded and approved unanimously.

On fiscal matters the Board approved appropriation of the FY2023 budget, additional budget items, payment of monthly bills and a refund for building permit #310. Each of those motions passed with all supervisors voting aye. Administrator Witt also announced a Juneteenth celebration for June 18.

The meeting minutes do not include draft contextualization materials or detailed budget figures in the public record; the contextualization team pledged further outreach and a draft return to the Board.
