Charlotte County treasurer reports delinquent‑tax collections and board agrees to post delinquent list Aug. 15

County Treasurer Patricia Berkeley reported to the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors on collection activity through the end of July. Berkeley said her office has collected about 23% of delinquent accounts; the record shows $28,768.92 collected in June and $118,631.14 collected in July. She said 2020 taxes are now delinquent and will go to the county attorney and that a 2017 balance of $13,782.96 is eligible to be written off.

Berkeley told the board her office prefers to work directly with citizens to set payment plans rather than immediately refer accounts to collection agencies, but accounts older than a year generally are sent to collections. She recommended posting the county’s delinquent‑tax list to the website on a specific date and asked for guidance about safeguards, including researching deceased persons’ accounts before posting to avoid errors. Supervisors discussed timing and agreed to post the list as of Aug. 15 to allow staff time to prepare and vet entries.

Next steps: Treasurer’s office will research deceased‑person accounts and prepare the delinquent‑tax list for posting on Aug. 15.
