Burleson County commissioners approve opioid settlements, contracts and multiple routine measures

The Burleson County Commissioners Court unanimously approved a series of settlements, contracts and routine administrative items at its July 24 regular meeting in Caldwell.
County Judge Keith Schroeder opened the session. By recorded motions and unanimous votes, the court approved proposed opioid settlements with CVS, Walgreens and WalMart and accepted a $78,000 donation from WildFire Energy. Commissioners also approved a Hotel/Motel funding application for KS Ventures and authorized a Request for Proposals for administrative services tied to the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program for damage from the 2023 severe winter storm (DR-4705).
The court approved land-use items including a variance and a simplified plat for Michael La Fountain at 7509 Hwy 21 West and granted a subdivision exception for Joel Lamb on 3.368 acres in the S. Swearingen Survey. It accepted the Racial Profiling Report from the Precinct 3 Constable and adopted the Secretary of State’s online training with in-person examination for Volunteer Deputy Registrars under Election Code Section 13.048.
On procurement and contracts, commissioners authorized advertisement for proposals for road materials (including asphalt, culverts, fuel and hauling), approved selection from a food-services Request for Proposals for the county jail and indicated a possible contract award to Five Star Correctional Services, and approved a revised vehicle-utilization and transportation-services contract with Brazos Transit District for the Burleson Health Resource Center.
Financial items approved included the third-quarter FY2023 Investment Report and the Treasurer’s Report for June 2023. The auditor said the outside audit should be ready for the August meeting. Sales tax receipts were reported at $136,127, up 11.88% from July 2022. The court also approved a countywide burn ban and authorized payment of bills before adjourning.
All motions recorded in the minutes passed with unanimous recorded votes. Many items were taken as routine consent or by individual motion and recorded as ‘‘All voted Aye. None voted No.’’ The court noted its authority to consult with counsel under Chapter 551, Section 551.071 of the Texas Government Code for executive-session advice when necessary.

The court will reconvene for its next regular session as scheduled; the auditor indicated the county’s outside audit should be available in August.
