Spencer County Fiscal Court on Jan. 18 authorized two road‑department items: purchase of three sets of tires from Monroe's Garage for $4,230 and approval of up to $6,500 in additional repairs on an International dump truck that had a recent steering failure.
Road Foreman Todd Burch and magistrates described repeated maintenance on aging equipment. "I recommended getting rid of these things two years ago; they have done nothing but put money in them," Magistrate J. Moody said, while other members stressed the immediate need to keep trucks in service during winter weather.
The court unanimously approved the tire purchase and authorized the repair spend after reviewing competing estimates and labor time considerations; the International repair estimate included parts and labor for power‑steering lines, pump and pitman arm work, and a shop labor estimate that drove the higher total. The court noted tradeoffs between replacing older trucks and continued repairs but took the near‑term step of authorizing repairs to maintain safe winter operations.
No purchase of replacement vehicles was approved; the court reserved replacement decisions for future budget discussions.
