Fiscal Court weighs employee turnover study, Goodnight House repairs and election schedule; vehicle sale list tabled

Simpson County Fiscal Court addressed several administrative and community items at its May 2 meeting, including a proposal to investigate an independent employee survey, authorization for repairs to the historic Goodnight House contingent on outside funding, and scheduling for upcoming elections.
At Magistrate Marty Chandler’s suggestion, County Judge/Executive Mason Barnes agreed to look into hiring an independent firm to conduct an employee survey aimed at identifying reasons for high turnover in some county departments. Barnes said the court should better understand causes of turnover before setting remedies or policy changes.
Barnes also reported on Franklin Forward, a citizen‑engagement program, and suggested Fiscal Court meet with the Franklin City Commission to learn more and consider Simpson County involvement. Barnes further reported that the recent Scott Waste Amnesty Days collected 198 loads of trash and 57 loads of recyclables.
Emergency Management Director Robert Palmer told the court that ground would be broken next week for a new radio communications tower at the community park. The court authorized $13,000 from county properties maintenance and repairs — contingent on a $13,000 contribution from the Chamber of Commerce — to meet a $26,000 quote from JMD Construction for exterior wood repairs and painting at the Goodnight House.
The court tabled approval of the list of county vehicles to be sold until the May 16 meeting. County Attorney Sam Phillips and County Clerk Austin Johnson reported that 2022 delinquent property tax bills had been transferred to the County Clerk’s office and set Sept. 19 as the sale date for any unpaid delinquent tax bills. Johnson also announced absentee and early in‑person voting dates and locations for the upcoming election.
The court approved a resolution recording payroll changes for two full‑time firefighters who completed confined space training. The meeting adjourned at 11:05 a.m.
What happens next: Judge Barnes will investigate survey options, County leaders will coordinate with the Chamber regarding Goodnight House funding, and vehicle disposals and the SRO interlocal ordinance return to the May 16 meeting for further action.
