Simpson County moves forward on safe-room projects and radio tower; authorizes no-cost disaster-assessment support

Emergency Management Director Robert Palmer told the Fiscal Court Aug. 15 that work on a community-park safe room has made little progress because Hazard Mitigation Grant paperwork and KY Emergency Management (KYEM) contract execution remain pending. He said the county is awaiting the signed KYEM contract so the county can move forward with design and engineering.
Palmer reported the county erected a radio communications tower last week; contractors are working on the foundation and generator pad and the department expects building construction at the tower site in October. He cautioned that installation of radio equipment may be delayed because Kentucky State Police timing may not align with local equipment readiness.
Palmer also announced, unofficially, that another $600,000 grant for a shelter on the city's west side is coming. Separately, the court authorized a no-cost contract with EUDS Consulting to supplement assessments after a presidentially declared disaster; any EUDS costs would be covered by FEMA Assistance Disaster Recovery or similar federal funds in the event of a qualifying disaster.
The court authorized Judge/Executive Mason Bames to sign the EUDS contract. No construction schedules or equipment-delivery dates were committed at the meeting; officials described several items as contingent on state or federal approvals.
