Expo Center reports missing shelves for toy giveaway; emergency management recounts recent deployments

Expo Center Manager Richard Bedford told the commissioners Dec. 1 that staff are preparing for the weekend Toy Giveaway but discovered 17 marked storage shelves cannot be located. Bedford said the missing shelving measured about 5 feet by 2 feet 8 inches each and that staff plan to purchase lumber and build replacements (approximately 274 board feet total).
Bedford also reported a benefit had lower attendance because of the weather and described an incident in which a person tested a mud truck or motorcycle on the Expo dirt track without permission; the vehicle had to be towed and Bedford said he is attempting to identify and contact the owner.
Deputy Director Denton Cossey of McAlester/Pittsburg County Emergency Management told the board the department had a busy November and deployed Nov. 30 to Atoka County for a search-and-rescue operation that located a missing man alive. Cossey noted Emergency Management’s role supporting the Expo toy drive and listed upcoming meetings, testing and training events.
Bedford said staff will address language/behavior concerns raised about a recent event. The board did not take formal action on these reports; both managers’ written reports were filed with the meeting record.
