Water committee plans public meeting for CDBG application; staff report regional storm response

Evan Sanders told the Sevier County Water Committee on Nov. 7 that applications for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) are due March 7, 2025, and that two items must be completed before the county applies: hold a public meeting and secure a Commission resolution.
Commissioner Warren Hurst asked whether the full Commission would meet in January to consider the resolution. Mayor Larry Waters said the Commission typically does not meet in January and that the resolution could be voted on at the December meeting. Director Sanders said the public meeting must take place before the resolution is authorized and staff will plan the meeting prior to the regularly scheduled Commission meeting on Dec. 16, 2024.
On emergency response, Director Brent Shults updated the committee about regional assistance after Hurricane Helene. "No SCWD customers were ever forced to be under a boil water advisory," Shults said, and he described coordinated pumping assistance from Sevier County Water Department and the water departments of Pigeon Forge, Sevierville and Gatlinburg to support Newport.
The committee did not take formal action on the CDBG application during this meeting; staff were directed to schedule the public meeting and return materials for a December vote.
The meeting adjourned at 3:26 p.m.
