Commission raises Franklin County inmate work‑release fee to $65 per week

The Franklin County Commission approved Resolution 9h‑0919 on Sept. 16 raising the weekly fee charged to inmates participating in the county’s work‑release program from $45 to $65. The motion was moved by Commissioner Lydia Curtis Johnson, seconded by Jennifer Stines, and approved by roll call 13 ayes and one pass.
The resolution, drafted by county attorneys and reviewed by the commission, states the fee entitles participants to lodging, meals and emergency care provided by facility medical staff; it does not cover off‑site hospitalization, surgical or dental care, ambulance transport or prescription drugs. The resolution also permits courts to set a lower fee in cases of indigence.
Under the policy the sheriff is authorized to collect the weekly per‑diem assessment and remit collected amounts to the county trustee monthly for deposit to the county general fund. The resolution makes nonpayment a ground for suspension or termination from the work‑release program.
Why it matters: the increase responds to higher operational costs for the detention facility and will raise revenue to offset those costs. The resolution takes effect Sept. 22, 2019, and applies to current and future work‑release participants unless a court orders otherwise.
