Claiborne County Commission approves bridge funding, sheriff vehicle purchases and library repairs

The Claiborne County Commission on Aug. 18 in Tazewell approved multiple budget amendments and project authorizations affecting roads, public safety, schools and county facilities.
A major action was a $402,489 appropriation for state-aid bridge construction and replacement on Water Street, approved to complete a capital outlay line item for bridge construction. The resolution (Res. 2025-087) was sponsored by Commissioner David Mundy and passed by roll-call vote 21–0.
The commission also approved a $224,000 appropriation from undesignated fund balance to purchase additional sheriff patrol vehicles (Res. 2025-088). The resolution notes that no patrol vehicles were replaced in fiscal 2025 because School Resource Officer (SRO) grant vehicles were phased into patrol and that the older units’ maintenance costs now exceed their value. That amendment was approved 21–0.
Other adopted budget amendments and authorizations included:
- A Board of Education budget amendment recognizing $53,562.98 in state grant carryover for learning-loss and summer transportation programs and appropriating the funds across payroll and supply accounts (Res. 2025-085; roll-call 21–0).
- A $3,150 appropriation from a restricted County Clerk reserve for replacement printers and office equipment used to print license-decals (Res. 2025-089; roll-call 21–0).
- Authorization for the finance department to solicit bids to repair, repaint and replace the façade of the Claiborne County Library and to make the front door handicap accessible; the commission amended and approved the request (Res. 2025-090; roll-call 21–0).
- Recognition of $1,450 in citizen contributions to the Family Justice Center, including $1,400 earmarked to buy a washer and dryer (Res. 2025-086; roll-call 21–0).
- A budget amendment adding $8,000 to the Coroner/Medical Examiner account to pay liability insurance required for a licensed physician serving in that part‑time role (Res. 2025-092; roll-call 21–0).
- Authorization to pay an estimated $2,700 from undesignated surplus funds to repair two out‑of‑service fire hydrants in the South Claiborne Volunteer Fire Department district (Res. 2025-093; roll-call 21–0).
The commission also passed a procedural resolution allowing the County Trustee to accept property tax payments any time after July 10, 2025 and to accept tax-relief applications on the same date pursuant to Tennessee Code Annotated § 67-1-702 (Res. 2025-091). Several procedural items — approvals of minutes, the highway department equipment list and a slate of notary public appointments — were carried by voice vote earlier in the meeting.

Why it matters
