Kingston work session: staffing concerns, contract talks, permit fees and holiday plans

During the Nov. 17 work session, Administrator Sondra Riviello updated council on personnel and operational items beyond the budget and grant discussions.
Riviello said the town's recent advertisements for entry-level police and fire positions drew fewer applicants than expected for the fire department; she plans to meet with the ambulance service, the fire department and the civil service commission to develop recruitment strategies ahead of expected retirements. She also reported that negotiations with AFSCME on a new DPW contract have concluded and that she will review the final contract, received from AFSCME attorney Carrie Gallagher, before placing it on a future agenda for council approval.
Riviello said she will speak with Chief Kotchik about gaming machines in the town and thereafter ask council to consider raising permit fees. She also outlined plans for a Nov. 30 Christmas Tree Lighting at the Kingston Recreation Center auxiliary parking lot featuring a food truck, musical performers, Santa and a canned food drive to benefit the West Side Pantry; Police Clerk Bailey Tregan and Administrative Assistant Stanley Motyka were listed as event planners.
The session closed when Nancy Cooper moved to adjourn, John Chernesky seconded, and council adjourned at 7:42 p.m.
