Bland County board unanimously adopts employment agreement and names Cameron Burton county administrator effective May 1

The Bland County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved an employment agreement and the appointment of Cameron Burton as county administrator, the board said at its regular meeting Feb. 28.

Chairman Adam Kidd opened the vote after the board returned from an executive session called to discuss personnel matters under Va. Code §2.2-3711(A)(1). Randy Johnson moved to adopt the employment agreement for Burton; Stephen Kelley seconded, and the motion carried on a unanimous roll-call vote.

The board approved Burton's appointment as Assistant County Administrator effective March 1 through April 30, 2023, with all rights and signatory powers in the absence of the sitting county administrator. Burton's appointment as County Administrator is set to commence on May 1, 2023, the motion states. The board then adopted the certification required by Va. Code §2.2-3712, affirming that the executive session addressed only announced personnel topics.

Dr. Eric Workman, who is identified in meeting records as the county administrator, offered the invocation earlier in the meeting and later participated in procedural items; he did not file the motion to appoint Burton. The motions to adopt the agreement and to make the appointment were moved and seconded by board members; roll-call votes recorded Keith Costello, Randy Johnson, Stephen Kelley and Adam Kidd as voting yea on the actions.

The employment agreement and appointment followed the board's executive session and the formal certification they adopted on the record. The board did not record any dissenting votes and provided no additional public detail about the terms beyond the effective dates and the delegation of signatory authority.

The board adjourned after taking the appointment vote.
