Lunenburg board approves grants, surplus vehicles and routine county business

The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on Feb. 9 approved a set of administrative actions including grant acceptance, vehicle dispositions, and appointments.
Circuit Court Clerk Gordon Erby requested acceptance of a Library of Virginia Records Preservation grant for Item Conservation totaling $54,558; the board unanimously accepted and appropriated the funds to the clerk’s budget. Administrator Tracy M. Gee presented three Sheriff’s Office requests: transfer $3,635.39 in vacancy savings from the Comp Board to the Uniforms and Apparatus line item; accept $10,575 from insurance for a totaled 2011 Dodge Charger to the Sheriff's Capital Fund; and declare three vehicles surplus (2023 Chevrolet Blazer VIN 3261, 1985 Chevrolet Blazer VIN 6591, and 2009 Ford Crown Victoria VIN 5366). The board approved listing the surplus vehicles on govdeals.com and agreed to sell the 2009 Crown Victoria to the Kenbridge Police Department for $2,500.
Director of Community Development Taylor Newton reported that the county’s ARPA tourism grant application was approved and listed planned uses including welcome signs and courthouse signage; the board also approved a resolution supporting the Virginia America 250 Commission recitals to enable additional grant applications and local commemoration planning. The board reappointed Mike Champion to the Piedmont Senior Resources Board for a term beginning Feb. 14, 2023.
School Superintendent Charles Berkley reported enrollment increased by seven students since last month but remains 29 students below the budgeted ADM; he described a TRANE grant application for high‑school updates that, if advanced, would require a 5% local match and could result in $1.4 million in state construction funds for the first phase. VDOT representative Kevin Smith updated the board on dirt‑road maintenance and the Hardy Road project (detours starting Feb. 20 and an estimated six‑week construction window, weather permitting). County Attorney Frank Rennie noted pending litigation filed by Friends of the Meherrin River on the Red Brick Solar project with a hearing set for Feb. 22 at 1:00 p.m., and reported receipt of an additional $900 in opioid settlement funds.
