Lunenburg and Mecklenburg approve consolidated Fire/EMS mutual aid agreement

The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors on June 8 unanimously approved a consolidated Fire/EMS Mutual Aid Agreement with Mecklenburg County. The agreement, entered April 13, 2023, replaces prior memorandums and establishes terms for joint responses to fires, hazardous materials incidents, specialized rescue, incident management and emergency medical services.
The agreement states that each party will endeavor to provide assistance within its capabilities but is not compelled to respond if its resources are already committed. It clarifies that neither party will generally be liable to the other for loss, damage, personal injury or death arising from performance under the agreement, nor expected to reimburse the other for apparatus, equipment or personnel costs; reimbursement may occur for specialized supplies and extinguishing agents when means are available.
The agreement also specifies operational control: the first company officer on scene has general supervision until an authorized official of the political subdivision assumes command. The board unanimously voted to approve the agreement as presented.
