Lunenburg schools accept $78,489 in post-budget grants; $1.4M capital work planned at Central High

Assistant School Superintendent James Abernathy told the Board the school division was awarded $18,479.81 in American Rescue Plan funds for homeless children and $24,000 in Virginia Tiered Systems of Support funding, and asked the Board to appropriate $42,479.81 to the FY2023 School Board budget. The Board unanimously approved the appropriation, revising the school budget to $28,341,702.
Abernathy also reported a $36,009.60 Restraint & Seclusion grant that became available after the FY2023 budget. "The funds would be used to train teachers and staff in tactics that would help to deescalate someone threatening to hurt themselves or others," he said. The Board unanimously approved accepting and appropriating the grant, revising the school budget to $28,377,712.
On enrollment and capital needs, Abernathy said the official ADM on March 31 was 1,491, about 29 students below budget, though more recent counts reached 1,508. He outlined planned summer work at Central High School including bathroom upgrades, wastewater system updates and security improvements, with total construction estimated at $1.4 million and state funding expected by the end of June. He said any remaining construction funds would be requested for carryover into the next fiscal year.
The Board's approvals were unanimous on the appropriations. No local match was required for the grants presented.
