Lunenburg Schools report enrollment below budgeted target; capital work at Central High slated to begin

At the Sept. 14 meeting the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors received updated school financial reports and a budget-status update from Jamyce Watson, Director of Finance for Lunenburg Schools. Watson said revised June and July reports separate local and textbook funds and that the school will align reporting with monthly Treasurer’s reports for transparency and approval timelines.
Superintendent Dr. Sharon Stanislas reported average daily membership (ADM) of 1,492 as of Sept. 11, below the fiscal-year budgeted ADM of 1,510. She said procurement is underway for phase one of planned capital improvements at Central High School, which include changes to the front entry, updates to the canopy, a School Resource Officer room and an updated principal’s office; construction has not yet started.
The board discussed staffing challenges later in the meeting: Administrator Tracy M. Gee said the school system has SRO vacancies and one candidate will not meet state (DCJS) experience requirements until Jan. 2024, and the sheriff’s office may face dispatcher losses due to regional pay competition. Gee recommended convening a Public Safety Committee to consider retention and staffing approaches.
The board took no separate vote specific to the school report but accepted the update as part of its consent and monthly reporting cycle.
