County appoints temporary counsel and directs legal action to recover Veterans Service Grant after closed session

Mackinac County commissioners on Jan. 23 voted to appoint attorney Eric Conn as temporary legal counsel and, following a closed-session legal briefing about a Veterans Service Grant, accepted counsel’s recommendation to pursue steps to recover the grant for the county.
Commissioner John Kling moved and Commissioner Austin Kimberling seconded the appointment of Eric Conn; the motion passed unanimously among the four members present. The board then entered closed session under MCL 15.268(h) at 5:07 p.m. to receive a legal opinion regarding the Veterans Service Grant and returned to open session at about 5:11–5:12 p.m.
After the closed-session discussion, the board voted to accept counsel’s recommendation to proceed with efforts to return the grant to county possession. “It was moved by Commissioner Kling second by Commissioner Kimberling to accept recommendation of counsel to proceed course of action to get the grant back in County possession,” the minutes record; commissioners voted yes unanimously among those present.
The board also approved regular bills totaling $131,529.42 and additional bills of $14,068.70 by roll call, and adjourned at 5:32 p.m.
What’s next: The board authorized staff and counsel to pursue the recommended legal steps; no additional timetable was included in the public minutes.
