Mackinac County commissioners approve hires, retirement resolution and health-services agreement; Brownfield nomination fails on 2-2 vote

The Mackinac County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 23 adopted a retirement resolution for Deputy Treasurer Becky Paul and approved a contract authorization with Mackinac Straits Health Services, while filling two advisory seats and approving requests for proposals for county hiring and legal services.
Chair Mike Patrick read the retirement resolution for Becky Paul, which the board adopted by roll-call vote. “We’re grateful for Deputy Treasurer Paul’s years of service,” Patrick said as commissioners voted to approve the resolution.
Clerk Hillary Vowell presented an agreement with Mackinac Straits Health Services and the board authorized the chair to sign the document. The motion passed unanimously among present commissioners.
The board voted to appoint Daryl Orr to the Superior District Library Board and Jill Eyre to the county Planning Commission. Both appointments were approved by roll call with no dissent among the four commissioners present.
A nomination to the Brownfield Authority drew a split vote. Commissioner John Kling moved to appoint Jodi Kaiser and Commissioner Judy St. Louis-Scott seconded; the roll-call result was YES: Kling, St. Louis-Scott; NO: Austin Kimberling, Mike Patrick. With Commissioner Daryl Schroeder absent, the 2-2 tie meant the motion failed and the vacancy remains.
“Jodi is a great asset to the Brownfield Authority,” Commissioner St. Louis-Scott said during discussion, urging reconsideration; Treasurer Tina Jones-Massey later echoed her support for Kaiser.
The board also approved a request for proposals for a new Equalization Director (the temporary contract with Dulcee Ranta expires at the end of May) and a separate RFP for county legal counsel after current counsel announced a sale and retirement. Both RFP approvals passed unanimously.
The meeting concluded with routine communications and scheduling: Clerk Vowell recommended a Committee of the Whole meeting on Feb. 5 to review two reclassification applications, and the board adjourned at 5:32 p.m.
What’s next: The Brownfield Authority seat remains open after the tie vote; the board will proceed with recruiting for the Equalization Director and legal counsel through the approved RFPs.
