Lester Livermore, chair of the newly formed Animal Advisory Committee, told the Mackinac County Board of Commissioners on March 13 that the committee had approved its bylaws and is meeting on the first Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Annex Boardroom. He asked the board to finalize appointments so the committee could begin full operations.
Commissioner Austin Kimberling moved and Commissioner John Kling seconded a motion to table the appointment of two new committee members until the board receives the two resignation letters from currently appointed members; the motion carried with Commissioners Kimberling, Kling, Schroeder and St. Louis-Scott voting yes and Commissioner Mike Patrick absent. The record shows the committee described having “lots of talented and committed people” but that two initially appointed members want to step down; the board said it would not accept replacements until formal resignation letters arrive.
Separately, the board discussed restoring an animal shelter position from part time to full time — a role the record says was previously full time. Commissioners said the staffing decision should be discussed jointly by the Animal Advisory Committee and the full county board; Commissioner Kimberling moved to table that item and Commissioner Kling seconded. The board did not set a date to resume the discussion.
The board did not approve any appointments or personnel changes at the March 13 meeting; the matter will return once the required resignation letters and further committee recommendations are provided.
