Benzie County commissioners approve $580,501.42 in bills, adopt personnel policies and greenlight contracts

The Benzie County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 22 approved routine fiscal and personnel measures, including payment of $580,501.42 in county bills, adoption of multiple personnel policies and authorization for contract and grant agreements.
The meeting opened with a unanimous vote to approve the agenda and the Oct. 8 minutes. Finance staff presented a bills list and Commissioner Cunningham moved, with Commissioner Nye seconding, to approve payment of bills dated Oct. 4–17, 2024 totaling $580,501.42; the motion passed on a unanimous roll-call vote.
On the consent calendar the board approved the Employee Benefits Policy, a restated Longevity Personnel Policy and the Termination/Separation Policy after a grouped motion by Commissioner Warsecke, seconded by Commissioner Cunningham. Commissioner Warsecke moved to adopt the FMLA Personnel Policy after it was removed for separate consideration; that motion passed unanimously. The board tabled a separate item to amend the Political Activity Policies pending suggested verbiage.
The board also approved a one-year extension to MGT Impact Solutions to prepare the county’s annual Cost Allocation Plan in a not-to-exceed amount of $8,000; the motion (moved by Commissioner Nye and seconded by Cunningham) authorized the Board Chair to sign after legal review. Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the 2024 EMPG grant agreement with the Michigan State Police — Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division and authorized signatures by the chair and the county’s Emergency Management Coordinator.
Chair Bob Roelofs and County Administrator Katie Zeits were authorized to sign agreements where noted. No motions failed during the meeting; most votes were unanimous.
The meeting closed after additional administrative reports and public comment. The board confirmed one committee appointment and scheduled routine outreach events including a Road Commission open house on Oct. 26 and a county CPR training opportunity on Nov. 8.
