Benzie County board accepts amended apportionment report, approves budget amendment and several grants

The Benzie County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 12 accepted an amended L‑4029 Apportionment Report reflecting the recently approved Benzie County Jail millage and approved a string of routine financial and grant measures.
In a roll-call vote, Commissioners unanimously accepted the amended L‑4029 and Apportionment Report and authorized the chair to sign. Commissioner Warsecke made the motion and Commissioner Cunningham seconded.
The board also approved a $2,500 budget amendment to recognize revenues and expenditures for the Veterans Affairs financial aid program after a motion from Commissioner Cunningham, seconded by Commissioner Sauer; the vote was unanimous among present commissioners.
Two Tribal Council 2% allocation grant applications were authorized: one on behalf of Horse North Rescue (moved by Commissioner Warsecke; seconded by Commissioner Cunningham) and one on behalf of Benzie Senior Resources (moved by Commissioner Nye; seconded by Commissioner Cunningham). Both motions passed on roll call with Ayes recorded from Commissioners Cunningham, Jeannot, Nye, Roelofs, Sauer and Warsecke; Commissioner Markey was excused.
The board approved a services agreement with Michigan State University Extension for fiscal year 2024–2025 for $47,084. Jennifer Berkey answered commissioners’ questions during the presentation; Commissioner Sauer moved approval and Commissioner Cunningham seconded. The agreement was authorized with funds coming from the General Fund.
Finance business included approval of payment of bills from Oct. 18 through Nov. 7, 2024, totaling $474,228.12; that motion, made by Commissioner Sauer and seconded by Commissioner Nye, passed on roll call. The county treasurer, Kelly Long, told commissioners winter tax bills will go out at the end of the month, auditors are scheduled for early December, and the county is transitioning to a new credit card vendor.
Commissioner Jeannot moved, and Commissioner Sauer seconded, to table appointments to the Parks and Recreation Commission pending further review; that motion carried. Later in the meeting the board voted to suspend its rules to consider a Village of Honor Corridor Improvement Authority item moved from the afternoon study session; the suspension passed on a 5–1 roll call (Nay: Commissioner Sauer; Excused: Commissioner Markey), and the matter was adjourned pending further information.
The meeting concluded after presentation of correspondence and final public comment. The board adjourned at 11:13 a.m. and reconvened for a study session at 11:45 a.m.
