National Park Service honors county K9; broadband and senior services updates presented to commissioners

The Benzie County Board of Commissioners heard presentations Dec. 10 in Beulah from the National Park Service, local social-service leaders and a regional broadband coordinator.
Acting Chief Ranger Scott Dekkers of the National Park Service presented K9 Officer Omar and Deputy Dumond with a plaque and gift card for their roles in locating a missing person in August near Pierce Stocking Drive within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Sheriff Kye Rosa thanked Benzie Senior Resources director Doug Durand for his service and noted the recognition as an example of how mutual-aid agreements help the region.
Doug Durand presented the Benzie Senior Resources Annual Report for 2024 and answered commissioner questions. County Administrator Katie Zeits reported staffing shifts — Kyle Mauer moved into a maintenance position and the county is recruiting an animal control officer — and provided several community notices, including an upcoming Road Commission meeting Dec. 19 on a special-election millage and stakeholder meetings with the county EDC.
Justin Maylone of Cherry Capital Connection updated the board on broadband expansion work in the county and requested a letter of support from elected officials for a grant application; he said he would supply a template for the requested letter.
During public comment Mary Haan of Homestead Township urged the board to give the Village of Honor’s Corridor Improvement Authority a chance to propose innovative ideas to help the community; the board later voted to support creation of the authority during the meeting’s business agenda.
The board received correspondence from local townships and health department minutes and adjourned at 11:56 a.m.
