Register of Deeds warns of neighboring-county cyberattack, notes record transfer-tax deposit

Paula Eberhart, Benzie County Register of Deeds, told commissioners that a cyberattack in neighboring Wexford County had taken that county’s Register of Deeds office offline and disrupted mortgage processing.
Eberhart thanked the board for approving enhanced security and firewall protections for Benzie County’s systems. She also reported that December 2024 produced the largest transfer-tax deposit she has seen in her roughly 30 years in the office and said a Property Fraud Alert is available on the Register of Deeds website.
Eberhart’s remarks were given during the elected-officials and department-heads portion of the Jan. 14 meeting.
