Planners report trail grant pursuit, parcel mapping upgrade and winter shelter opening

Staff and commissioners updated the Charlevoix County Planning Commission on a citizen-led grant effort for the Boyne City–Charlevoix Trail, upcoming parcel-mapping software, runway reconstruction at Beaver Island airport, and a winter emergency men's shelter opening Nov. 1.
Planning Director Kiersten Stark told the commission a citizens group is working with Wade Trim and the Top of Michigan Trails Council to pursue grant funding for survey work needed to advance Phase 3 of the Boyne City–Charlevoix Trail; the county Board of Commissioners passed a resolution of support. Stark also reported that the Little Traverse Wheelway boardwalk will need repairs in the near term.
Commission members reported a variety of local items: Sherm Chamberlain said the county will implement new parcel search and mapping software to display more detailed parcel data; Pam Grassmick noted Beaver Island’s airport runway reconstruction and recommended the Michigan Department of Natural Resources be involved in township planning where state lands are prominent. Mike Ritter reported school safety drills and participation on a St. Marys Cement Plant advisory committee focused on reducing cement kiln dust and blasting vibration. Marshal Bakker said Charlevoix’s emergency overnight men’s shelter opened Nov. 1 for the winter season, serving about 20 people last winter; he also flagged a Nov. 18 Banks Township public hearing concerning rescinding that township’s zoning ordinance.
The updates were informational; no formal actions were taken on these items at the meeting.
