Barry County staff to bring updated sick-leave policy; commissioners raise concerns about juvenile lodging at county jail

At the Feb. 25 Barry County Board meeting County Administrator Eric Zuzga updated commissioners on the Earned Sick Time Leave Act and said staff will present an updated county policy for discussion at the Committee of the Whole meeting next week.
Commissioners reported recent meetings and described operational impacts: Commissioner Mike Callton said the Transit Board adjusted its sick-leave policy to comply with the law, and the Commission on Aging also made policy changes. Commissioner Bruce Campbell said he attended the Health Board meeting and commented that finalization of the county's sick-time adjustments “turned out well” (as recorded in meeting notes).
Separately, the Prairieville Police Chief asked the board to consider laws governing lodging juveniles at the county jail. Commissioner Marsha Bassett also raised the matter; public commenter Dar Leaf of Baltimore Township said the expense of lodging juveniles at the jail is a concern. Gary White of Castleton Township returned for limited public comment to raise concerns about the Open Meetings Act and to reference discussion around agreements between the Commission on Aging and Thornapple Manor.
What happens next: County staff will prepare a draft Earned Sick Time Leave Act policy for the Committee of the Whole. The board did not take formal action on juvenile lodging or the COA/Thornapple Manor matters during the Feb. 25 session; those items were raised for consideration and potential follow-up.
