Decision on adding four sheriff deputies delayed after COPS grant denial

JASPER, Ind. — The Dubois County Commissioners postponed a staffing decision after the sheriff’s office said a federal COPS grant application was unsuccessful and requested four additional deputies.
Chief Deputy Jesus Monarrez told the board the department was not awarded the COPS grant for two deputies. He presented a list of positions and shift coverages and requested four deputies to meet road coverage needs; two positions had been previously approved pending the grant award. Commissioners Nick Hostetter and Serice Stenftenagel said they needed additional time to research the request. President Chad A. Blessinger asked Sheriff Tom Kleinhelter to attend the next meeting to present the request in person.
No formal vote was taken on adding the four positions; the board asked for further information and scheduled follow-up for the next regular meeting. The request remains under consideration pending the sheriff’s appearance and additional information about costs and shift coverage.
