County to test polymer road-stabilization product; bridge and equipment updates reported

Highway Superintendent Steve Berg and Highway Engineer Brent Wendholt updated the commissioners on several infrastructure items on Aug. 19.
Wendholt summarized an Indiana LTAP report on local road and bridge conditions and recommended a field trial of a polymer-based road-stabilization product after vendor demonstrations at the NACE conference. He presented two budgetary quotes for the trial — Dustpods (~$5,200) and Perma-Zyme (~$5,300 — and said the polymer products performed well and are more eco-friendly than alternatives. The board gave consensus to proceed with a road trial.
Berg reported County Council had approved advertising for an additional appropriation of $95,000 to replace a dump truck; that is an administrative step toward funding a replacement. Wendholt also reported construction progress on Bridge #254 (south wall footer poured; first 8-foot section completed and backfill planned) and noted drainage work associated with Shamrock Mine reclamation after the Indiana Department of Natural Resources released mining bonds. Samsara vehicle-tracking remains under review pending mechanic input and a Verizon service check.
The county will proceed with the product trial and continue bridge and reclamation work; specific procurement or appropriation actions beyond the advertising step were not finalized at the meeting.
