Houghton County board approves remonumentation grant, airpark outlot repurchase and other routine business

At its Dec. 12 regular meeting the Houghton County Board of Commissioners approved several routine and project-specific actions, including a remonumentation grant application, appointments to county boards, and a resolution to re‑purchase an airpark outlot.
The board approved paying bills totaling $2,481,037.54. It approved a 2024 Remonumentation grant application for $66,075 after a presentation by Joe Foster describing surveyor work near Otter Lake. The board also appointed John Haeussler and Tom Tikkanen to the Land Bank Authority for three‑year terms and approved Brownfield Redevelopment Board appointees by voice vote.
The board adopted Resolution #23‑23 authorizing Chair Tom Tikkanen to sign closing documents to re‑purchase Outlot A of the Houghton County Airpark Plat from Kirk and Tami Hammel for $14,943.00, reaffirming conditions of the previously executed Re‑Purchase Agreement. The County Clerk, Jennifer Kelly, certified the resolution.
Rachel Tarpey obtained a board resolution and letter of support for the Houghton Keweenaw Conservation District to seek Forestry Assistance Program funds from the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development; that resolution (Resolution #23‑24) passed unanimously. Lisa McKenzie of WUPPDR presented on an EGLE Part 115 Materials Management planning process and said countywide planning could take 3–5 years.
The board moved its January meeting to Jan. 17, 2024, approved $733 in National Association of Counties dues and adjourned at 5:16 p.m.
Public commenters raised questions about differences between the posted agenda and the county website and voiced concerns about glass recycling; commissioners said they would follow up.
