County approves sale of 911 building in Laurium for $300,000

The Houghton County Board approved Resolution 24-01 on Jan. 17, authorizing the sale of the county’s 911 building at 400 Hecla St. in Laurium to Torch Lake Federal Credit Union for $300,000. Chairman Tom Tikkanen said the purchase agreement has been signed and the closing was expected about a week later.
Tikkanen told the board the sale proceeds will be deposited in the county’s 911 fund and the property will be returned to the tax rolls. The motion to approve Resolution 24-01 passed with four yes votes; Commissioner Joel Keranen recorded an abstention.
The board did not discuss a replacement location or operations plan for 911 services at the Jan. 17 meeting; no implementation timeline was presented during the session.
