Sheriff seeks new courthouse security team; commissioners back plan pending funding

Sheriff Tom Kleinhelter updated the Dubois County Commissioners on courthouse security needs on June 17 and proposed creating a Courthouse Security team assigned solely to the Courthouse and Annex.
Kleinhelter said he would like four positions to implement bag screening and metal detection for all individuals entering the facilities and described plans to seek grant funding for equipment (the Emergency Management Agency has applied for a related grant expected to be awarded in September or October 2024). Commissioners asked that the Security Committee review the proposed policies and asked the Sheriff to work with Human Resources to draft job descriptions, establish wages, and prepare duty schedules. The Sheriff will seek County Council approval to fund the requested positions.
Commissioners Blessinger and Stenftenagel indicated consensus support for the request and asked staff to develop the implementation details for Council consideration.
