Board allocates $42,000 in opioid funds to Treatment Court; staffing funding questioned

The Houghton County Board of Commissioners voted Jan. 17 to allocate $42,000 from opioid-settlement funds to the county Treatment Court. The motion, made by Commissioner Joel Keranen and seconded by Commissioner Gretchen Janssen, carried unanimously.
The Personnel Committee will meet with Judge Daavettila to discuss whether the court should create a new staff position funded in part by the allocation. Commissioner Glenn Anderson urged caution, asking what would happen when the opioid funds run out and who would fund any continuing position.
Administrator Larson did not specify a long-term funding source during the meeting; the board did not adopt a financing plan at the Jan. 17 session. The allocation was presented as a one-time use of the county’s opioid-settlement funds.
The next procedural step is the Personnel Committee meeting with the judge to develop a staffing recommendation; the board did not set a date for that meeting at the Jan. 17 meeting.
