Houghton County commissioners approve ARPA-funded fire alarm upgrade, appointments and appropriations

In a routine Feb. 13 session, the Houghton County board approved a $59,865 ARPA-funded courthouse fire alarm upgrade, appointed five members to the Copper Country Mental Health Board, designated TAG Consulting as County Designated Assessor, and approved several appropriations including $20,000 for KEDA membership support.
Houghton — The Houghton County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 13 handled a slate of routine business, approving an ARPA-funded fire alarm upgrade at the courthouse, making several appointments and passing appropriations including county support for KEDA.
Administrator Larson told the board a recent fire drill showed courthouse alarms were inaudible in some offices. The board approved a KPL bid to install 65 alarms and about 2,000 feet of cabling at a cost of $59,865, to be paid from American Rescue Plan Act funds.
The board also approved appointments to the Copper Country Mental Health Board, naming Barry Fink, Pat Rozich, James Tervo, Richard Herrala and Julie Farmer to three-year terms. Commissioners approved Resolution 24-04 to rename a portion of M-26 in honor of Private Wesley Karna.
Equalization Director Jaikob Djerf presented an interlocal agreement related to the County Designated Assessor; the board approved TAG Consulting (Mildred Ann Gasperich) to serve in that role. The board also authorized sending a letter of support to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources for Stanton Township repairs to the Freda Grade recreational trail.
On appropriations, the minutes record NorthCare liquor tax distribution for Oct.–Dec. 2023 of $9,048.50; UPCAP 2024 dues (listed in the minutes as -$1,100.00); KEDA 2024 membership support of $20,000; and a $350 annual renewal to the Northwoods Rail Transit Commission. The board approved paying submitted bills totaling $1,807,555.75.
Administrator Larson announced he will attend an MMRMA board meeting Feb. 26–28 in Lansing at no cost to the county. The meeting adjourned at 5:03 p.m.
