Houghton County adopts 2023–24 equalization report showing about 15.7% increase in equalized value

Equalization Director Jaikob Djerf presented the county’s equalization evaluation at the April 11 meeting and the board adopted the report by unanimous vote.
Key figures Djerf presented: the county equalized value for 2023 is $1,823,610,232. Between 2023 and 2024 the county’s total assessed and equalized values increased by $247,694,200 — about a 15.72% increase — while personal property rose by $6,563,339 (about 8.69%). The county’s taxable value for 2023 was listed as $1,251,088,366; total taxable values increased by $102,448,035 (about 8.92%).
Djerf listed the top five units by assessed & equalized value: Houghton City ($245,341,842), Portage Township ($216,017,893), Hancock City ($206,990,159), Calumet Township ($201,914,604) and Torch Lake Township ($194,722,768). For taxable value the top five were Houghton City ($184,361,757), Hancock City ($149,158,942), Portage Township ($144,202,777), Calumet Township ($129,820,220) and Torch Lake Township ($129,068,270).
The board voted to adopt the Equalization report; minutes record the motion carried with Commissioners Janssen, Keranen and Britz voting yes.
Why it matters: increases in assessed, equalized and taxable values affect property-tax rolls and revenue forecasts for local units of government and taxing jurisdictions.
