Commissioners on the Houghton County Board voted May 15 to ask Sheriff Saaranen to assemble a Jail Development workgroup to study laws and planning requirements for a potential new county jail.
Commissioner Roy Britz raised the topic and recommended convening a group to review statutory requirements for building a new jail. Commissioners Britz and Glenn Anderson will work with the sheriff on appointments and scope. Commissioner Glenn Anderson moved for Sheriff Saaranen to set up the workgroup; Commissioner Gretchen Janssen seconded the motion and it passed unanimously (Yes: Anderson, Janssen, Tikkanen, Keranen, Britz).
The board recorded no opposition or specific timeline for the workgroup; the motion directs the sheriff to form the group and report back. No formal budget or staffing assignments were made at the May 15 meeting.
