Commissioner raises possible PFAS concern at defunct Peterson/Lahti landfill; county to follow up with EGLE

Commissioner Glenn Anderson told the Houghton County Board on July 9 that a recent alert raised a possible PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) concern at the defunct Peterson/Lahti landfill. Anderson asked Administrator Larson to follow up with the county’s PFAS attorney, Tim Smith.
Administrator Larson said Tim Smith had been contacted and that any reports or required actions from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) would be shared with Attorney Smith. Larson said he will walk the site with Treasurer Mattila and Jim Staley from EGLE on an upcoming Thursday or Friday to review conditions.
The board did not take formal action at the meeting; the matter was recorded as a follow-up direction to administration and legal counsel.
