Summary
After a Truth in Taxation public hearing June 18, the Houghton County Board of Commissioners voted 5-0 to raise the county operating millage by 0.3013 mills to 6.2070 mills, an estimated $372,828 (about 5.1%) increase in operating revenue for 2024.
Houghton — The Houghton County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously June 18 to raise the county's operating millage by 0.3013 mills, setting the total operating rate at 6.2070 mills for 2024 after a Truth in Taxation public hearing.
Elizabeth Anderson, the county’s equalization specialist, told the board the Millage Reduction Fraction is 0.9976 and the Base Tax Rate Fraction is 0.9492. She reported the county’s 2024 taxable value at $1,237,399,250 and said the proposed increase would yield roughly $372,828 in additional operating revenue, about a 5.10% increase over last year.
“After application of the BTRF and adjustment for a Convention/Facilities tax estimate of $188,449, the resulting base tax rate is 5.9057,” Anderson said during the hearing. A member of the public, Horst Schmidt, asked a clarifying question about the 0.3013 figure during the discussion.
The board opened the statutory Truth in Taxation hearing by motion and, after taking public comment and closing the hearing, adopted Resolution 24-13 by roll-call vote (Yes: Anderson, Britz, Tikkanen, Keranen, Janssen; No: none).
Why it matters: The millage increase allows Houghton County to collect additional operating revenue under state taxing rules; the board also adopted a companion resolution directing treasurers to collect the county-allocated summer levy in accordance with Public Act 357 of 2004.
What happens next: The clerk’s office certified the adopted resolutions on June 18, 2024, and the county will notify local treasurers and proceed with levy collection under the scheduled tax billing cycle.
