The Houghton County Board of Commissioners on July 9 approved amendments to Personnel Policy Articles 9.3 and 28 to correct gendered language and shorten the waiting period for health insurance coverage for new full-time employees.
Administrator Larson told the board the two policy articles needed updates to remove male references and to align the health-insurance waiting period with the county’s recruitment and retention goals. Larson said the 90-day probationary period for other fringe benefits would remain unchanged; the proposed change applies only to health coverage.
The Personnel Committee had recommended the revisions. Commissioner Joel Keranen moved adoption of the amendments; Commissioner Gretchen Janssen seconded the motion. The board voted yes: Keranen, Janssen, Anderson and Vice Chairman Roy Britz. Chairman Tom Tikkanen was absent.
The amendments were made effective immediately. The board did not provide a detailed cost estimate during the meeting; Administrator Larson stated the change would not substantially increase county costs.
