Grant County Weed Board reviews finances, spraying season and sets Ag Day and Oct. meeting date

At its Sept. 17 meeting the board accepted minutes and bills, heard a treasurer's report showing $131,683.77 in the fund, got an Extension Office notice about Ag Day (Nov. 13), received updates that about 75% of roads were sprayed and that a drone operator charges $38/acre, and set the next meeting for Oct. 15, 2024.
The Grant County Weed Board met Sept. 17 in Carson and approved routine minutes and bills before hearing updates on operations and upcoming events.
Merlin Leithold, the weed officer and secretary, reported a fund balance of $131,683.77 as of Sept. 1, bills presented tonight totaling $1,021.26 and income received tonight of $2,056.35. Dick moved to accept the treasurer’s report and pay bills; Marty seconded and the motion carried.
In old-business updates, Merlin said contractor Steven has largely finished his spraying work but covered fewer roads than in the prior season; Merlin estimated about 75% of roads have been sprayed. He reported that Spot on Aerial Applicators, a drone sprayer from Lemmon, charges $38 per acre and may add work in the Lark area if contacted. Merlin also reported that Randy Lyons has not responded to his calls and has not appeared to perform contracted work.
Merlin summarized items from the Washburn symposium, including North Dakota Department of Agriculture guidance on roadside pesticide spot checks and a presentation on Ventenata; he also mentioned a drug-task-force speaker who described drugs commonly found in roadside ditches. Merlin said county commissioners finalized department budgets and the weed board budget was approved as submitted; commissioners also granted a 3% wage increase to county employees.
The Extension Office circulated a flier announcing Grant County Ag Day on Nov. 13; Merlin distributed copies for board members to share with local landowners.
The board set its next meeting for Oct. 15, 2024 at 7:00 p.m. MDT at the Carson courthouse and adjourned at 9:42 p.m.
