Grant County reports 302,000 beetles distributed at 28th Annual Bug Day

The Grant County Weed Board reported at its July 16 meeting that the 28th Annual Bug Day, held June 27, had a strong community turnout and resulted in distribution of roughly 302,000 beetles. Weed Officer Merlin Leithold told the board 64 people took beetles home; USDA APHIS personnel and staff from Morton County assisted the event.
Merlin said the event was cool and breezy but drew attendees from a broad area, including Cass, Morton, Stutsman, Barnes, Burleigh, Oliver, Hettinger, Williams, Ward, Stark, Perkins and Grant counties. The board paid several local sweepers for Bug Day duties (Kalyssa Leithold, MariAnn Leithold, Tyr Hammergren, Isiah Lamontagne and Jackson Leithold). Morton County staff and three USDA APHIS personnel were noted as helping with the beetle distribution.
The minutes record that Bug Day sent out about 302,000 beetles and that the board considered the event successful; no follow-up actions or budget requests tied to the event were recorded in the minutes. The next significant local outreach event noted in the extension newsletter is the Grant County Fair in August.
