Residents tell Sumter County Council burned building, potholes and drainage need action

Several residents used the Aug. 8 public-comment period to press Sumter County Council for action on neighborhood safety, road repairs and code enforcement.
At-large resident Lottie Spencer said a building at 14 Hospital Street burned last year and remains unsecured, attracting people and leaving neighbors afraid. She told council she has contacted law enforcement and urged officials to require the owner to clean up the site. "This building should not be sitting there in such poor condition," Spencer said.
Michael Norman, speaking for the Ellerbee Estates homeowners association, described a drainage pipe that drains onto a subdivision road and said temporary fixes have failed; he asked public works for durable repairs. Dr. Brenda Williams, speaking in support of Spencer, said the affected area is low to moderate income and urged consistent code enforcement so fines and cleanup obligations are applied fairly.
Jackie Hughes, responding to earlier council discussion about R.E. Davis, suggested county officials explore land swaps or purchases with neighboring owners to secure space large enough for a football field.
Council did not take immediate action during the meeting; there were no recorded directives in the minutes tying staff to specific deadlines. The meeting adjourned at 7:38 p.m.
