Representatives of the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition briefed Sumter County Council on Sept. 26 about the program’s work and measurable outcomes.
Keth Ivey and Andrew Coston, data coordinator for the Coalition, said the program — which the presenters described as focusing on healthy relationships, parenting, economic mobility and health — has served 897 fathers since 2018 and positively affected 2,222 children. They reported 345 participants gained employment or better jobs, 228 completed job training programs, $519,762 in child support payments were made through program engagement, and $3,188,160 in costs were saved by keeping fathers out of the correctional system, according to the figures provided by the presenters. The Coalition also mentioned a partnership with Morris College’s Blaze Program and resources such as computers and a "Father’s Den" for parent-child time.
Council members discussed program particulars and how fathers are referred and supported, and the presentation was received as information with no vote or funding action taken at the meeting.
Next steps: Council will retain the presentation record; no formal county action or additional funding was authorized during the meeting.
