Residents press Sumter County Council on sheriff staffing and community needs during public comment

George Bates urged council members to address staffing shortfalls in the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, saying delays in response times affect communities such as Wedgefield and asking Council to fund additional vehicles and increase staff pay.
Dr. Brenda Williams, who identified herself as co-owner of Family Unit, Inc., a nonprofit health-care business, reminded council members that poverty remains a significant local issue and asked for funds to support people in need. Williams also urged members who serve on the SUATS committee to press for faster progress on safer crossing solutions for Highway 378, noting an engineering estimate that people cross that section as many as 77 times per day.
Council took no formal action on these public comments during the meeting; citizens were told questions would be answered after the meeting if requested.
