Ellsworth County raises EMS on-call pay, approves grant application for cardiac monitor

Ellsworth County commissioners voted unanimously Jan. 26 to raise emergency medical services on-call pay from $4 to $6 per hour and to permit the county EMS to apply for a Dane Hansen Foundation grant of $38,869.43 to buy a rebuilt Stryker cardiac monitor.
The motions were introduced during the county’s regular meeting at the Ellsworth County Courthouse. Commissioner Shawn Thomas moved to increase the on-call wage to $6 per hour; Commissioner Dennis L. Rolfs seconded the motion, which passed 3-0. Nathan Florain, the county’s EMS director, requested the pay increase and also sought permission to pursue foundation funding for the cardiac monitor and carrying case.
Commissioner Gregory C. Bender moved to allow EMS to apply to the Dane Hansen Foundation for $38,869.43 for a rebuilt cardiac monitor with Stryker; Thomas seconded and the motion carried 3-0. Florain also announced an internal personnel change, saying Tiffany Buck was promoted to team lead.
Why it matters: The pay change raises the county’s on-call compensation by 50 percent and is intended to support EMS staffing and retention. The planned equipment purchase would replace or upgrade cardiac-monitoring capability, contingent on grant approval.
