Ware County adds tax resolutions, land bank appointment and alcohol license to agenda; mobile catering request tabled

At the Dec. 9 work session the board added two tax-related resolutions to the regular meeting agenda (delegating penalty-waiver authority and accepting multiple forms of tax payment), recommended a land bank appointment, approved an off-premises alcohol license application for Huey's Country Store, tabled a mobile catering license request, discussed LMIG resurfacing priorities and received debris-collection and scheduling updates.
The Ware County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 9 added several administrative items to its regular meeting agenda and reviewed multiple staff updates.
Tax Commissioner Roger Collins outlined two resolutions that were added to the regular-meeting agenda: Resolution 2024-34 would delegate authority to the Tax Commissioner to waive certain penalties and interest (the delegation is based on O.C.G.A. 48-5-242) and Resolution 2024-35 would authorize acceptance of tax payments in forms other than cash; both were described as effective Jan. 1, 2025 and are renewed each term.
Interim County Manager Melinda Brooks presented an appointment item for the Waycross/Ware County Land Bank Authority. Commissioner Leonard Burse recommended William Simmons, who has served on the Waycross/Ware County Planning Commission; the appointment recommendation was added to the regular meeting agenda.
Planning and Codes Director James Shubert presented two alcohol-license matters. He recommended adding an off-premises beer-and-wine license for Huey's Country Store (7471 Albany Hwy, Millwood); owner Tejasben Patel has no disqualifiers and the location is more than 300 feet from a church, and the application was added to the regular agenda. A mobile alcohol-catering application from Cocktail Caravan, LLC (Harlee Harris and Sara Hickox) was discussed; Shubert said state regulations under State of Georgia Code 560-2-13 require permits for each catered event and that both county and state permits would be necessary. Commissioners asked staff for more information and tabled the mobile-catering application pending further research, including contacting Lowndes County.
Brooks also briefed commissioners on service updates: LMIG resurfacing priorities need selection for an expected LMIG allocation of about $1.219 million; debris-collection contractor Crowder Gulf was conducting a final sweep and is expected to finish by Dec. 21, and EMA Director Jonathan Daniell said FEMA will reimburse 100% of the debris-removal costs. WWDA Director Jason Rubenbauer said local legislators and county delegates will meet in Atlanta on Jan. 13, 2025, and staff noted the regular meeting set for Jan. 13 will be rescheduled to Jan. 16, 2025 to accommodate attendance.
Commissioner Timmy Lucas moved to adjourn the work session; Commissioner Jerry Pope seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. The session adjourned at 4:53 p.m.
